Coalfields Telephone DSL Service
DSL High Speed Internet Service is HERE
You may have heard about DSL-the new high speed Internet service available from Coalfields Telephone. But how does DSL work? How fast is it? What equipment do you need to receive DSL access on your computer?
To get you ready for DSL, we've compiled a simple, plain-English overview of how DSL works and what equipment you need to prepare.
What is DSL?
DSL is a revolutionary new technology that will forever change the way you work, live, play and communicate. DSL allows you to receive super fast Internet access (up to 46 times faster than a 56K modem) over your existing telephone line. This means that a file that would take you 30 minutes to download now would now take you about 45 seconds with DSL.
With DSL you can download streaming audio and video, play Internet games, or download large files with ease. You can preview a movie, attend a video conference, participate in distance learning, and be ready for whatever the Internet has to offer next. You'll never think twice before hitting the download button again!
How does it work?
DSL splits out the unused bandwidth on your existing telephone line, and uses this bandwidth to support high speed data traffic. This means that having Coalfields DSL service is like having two telephone lines in one. You can make phone calls or send faxes, and surf the Internet at the same time, over the same phone line! And, your high speed Internet connection is always on, which means you never have to waste time dialing up again.
DSL is a dedicated connection from your computer to our central office. So. unlike cable modems, you don't have to share your bandwidth with anyone. As a result, you'll experience more consistent download speeds. Simply open up your Internet browser to begin a session.
What equipment do I need to receive the service?
First, and most importantly, you must have a Coalfield's telephone line. Next, you need a DSL modem, which Coalfield's Telephone will provide to you for no upfront charge. Finally, your computer needs a network card to connect the DSL modem to the computer. If your computer doesn't already have a network Interface Card, we recommend a 10/100 3Com card. Mikrotec can install this card for you at a cost of about $55.00 (if you purchase the card from Mikrotec).
What does it cost?
For the increase in productivity you receive, DSL service is very inexpensive. Residential customers pay between $34.95 and $99.95 per month and business customers pay between $69.95 and $199.95 per month. Discounts may apply for bundled packages.
How do I get DSL?
Customers in all three Coalfields Telephone exchanges (478, 452 and 587) can receive DSL service. However, some areas served by Outside Plant Modules don't have the service available yet-but will as soon as there is more demand. Call to make sure you're eligible for DSL service.
Our technicians make it easy to get up and running with DSL quickly and easily, with an on-site visit to your home or office. And, as a Mikrotec Internet customer, you've got access to 24-hour technical support.
